Now that seven of its restaurants have been awarded three Michelin stars, the restaurant rating system that recognises fine-dining spots around the world, San Francisco has become the top spot in the US for food connoisseurs.
French tyre company Michelin has been publishing its Michelin Guide series for more than a century, and has been awarding stars to the world’s best restaurants since 1926. The San Francisco Bay Area received 55 Michelin stars in the newly-revealed 2018 guide, and its seven three-starred restaurants puts it ahead of New York’s six and Chicago’s three. Three stars means “exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey” in Michelin parlance.
The Red Guide’s anonymous inspectors gave three stars to San Francisco’s Benu, Coi, The French Laundry, Manresa, Quince, Saison and The Restaurant at Meadowood. They take their place among just over 100 restaurants worldwide to hold that honour, and place the city as the new fine-dining capital of America in the eyes of Michelin. In addition, Acquerello, Atelier Crenn, Baume, Californios, Commis, Lazy Bear and Single Thread were awarded two stars, and a further 41 restaurants received one star.
Winning a Michelin star is a huge accolade for any restaurant, with many travelling diners planning their itineraries around the restaurants that win them, and top chefs focusing their careers around achieving them. San Francisco is already an attractive destination for visitors, and has the most restaurants and farmers markets per capita in North America, supplied by pioneering local organic farms.
