Waiting around the airport doesn’t have to be a drag – and one Virgin America employee has shared evidence that he does his part to make sure that waiting at the gate comes with a little amusement.
Steve Freitag posted a series of images showing funny messages staff put on the departure boards on the photo sharing site Imgur, where he goes by the name rootbeer1, reports the Huffington Post. He writes in the description that “as a Virgin America employee, I'm encouraged to always put ‘something’ up on our gate signs, if there’s no weather delay or other important info to display. Sometimes we just try to amuse our guests”.
Steve posted some examples of the “something” they put up at San Francisco International Airport, clearly designed to bring a smile to the face of weary travellers. The comments were flooded with people who wished they could get a glimpse of his signs, with one person noting he is “clearly overqualified” for his job.
Steve notes that staff can put up messages and their guidelines are that they are to not be offensive, and important information – like weather delays – takes priority over pop culture references and jokes. But, for everyone who has yet to experience a funny Virgin America departure sign from an enthusiastic employee like Steve, it’s unclear whether they will last much longer. The airline was recently purchased by Alaska Air. Steve notes that the new owner “isn’t really known for a cheeky corporate culture, so signs like these are most likely going away”.
