The Maldives is to introduce a new green tourism tax to help cover the costs of disposing of the waste produced by visitors to the islands’ beach resorts. This follows the extension of the controversial bed tax for another year, and a 4% hike in the Tourism Goods & Services Tax, which came into force on 1 November. Tourism operators have expressed concerns that visitor numbers may be affected by the raft of additional taxes, which could make staying in the Maldives more expensive than visiting other comparable destinations in the Indian Ocean.
