Meghan Markle planned a surprise trip to New York this week to reunite with friends and celebrate her impending arrival with a baby shower. The special occasion was reportedly held in The Mark Hotel in Manhattan’s Upper East Side where friends of the Duchess were photographed arriving with gift bags.
The mum-to-be kept the event low-key with a reported 15 of her closest friends in attendance, including stylist Jessica Mulroney, Serena Williams, designer Misha Nonoo and Abigail Spencer, her former co-star on Suits. Royal reporter Omid Scobie detailed in Harper’s Bazaar that the New York baby shower is the first of two, with a second to be held in England following Meghan and Prince Harry’s royal visit to Morocco later this month.
On Tuesday afternoon Meghan and actress pal Abigail were photographed arriving hand-in-hand to The Mark after a trip to nearby gallery Met Bauer. The Mark, which bills itself as ‘New York’s most boldly lavish hotel” is a favourite among A-listers and previous celebrity guests include Oprah Winfrey, Victoria Beckham and Vogue matriarch Anna Wintour.
As one of the city’s most exclusive hotels, an overnight stay at The Mark starts from $880 (€676/£776). While it’s unclear where Meghan stayed, each suite in the hotel could easily cater to the needs of a visiting duchess. Located near Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Mark boasts an extraordinary range of personal service for its well-heeled guests such as room service from Michelin three-star chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and the opportunity for private 24-hour shopping at Bergdorf Goodman. Rooms come with Bang & Olufsen technology and Italian marble bathrooms.
Top of the hotel’s suites is the Penthouse at the Mark Hotel which is touted as America’s largest hotel suite and priced at $75,000 (€66,200/£57,000) per night. The 12,000-square-foot suite dwarfs most New York apartments with five bedrooms, four fireplaces, six bathrooms, a grand piano and two bars. Guests at The Penthouse also have their own library, dining room, conservatory and a rooftop terrace that provides views of the Met and Central Park. The Mark also has a Royal Suite, which has three bedrooms and costs $40,000 (£30,700/€35,290) a night.
While details of the birthday shower have been kept under wraps, it’s believed that the group of close-knit friends spent the afternoon at The Mark for the intimate baby shower before heading out to dinner in the Polo Bar, Ralph Lauren’s restaurant in Manhattan.
