Have you ever dreamed of escaping from the hustle and bustle of modern-day life and stepping into the magical, cosy world of The Shire? Well now you can enter Tolkien’s universe by renting this amazing Hobbit house in the Washington countryside.

Named, “Tiny House in the Shire”, the property was built by entrepreneur Kristie Wolfe and sits nestled into the mountains at Columbia River Gorge. Available to rent on Airbnb, the Hobbit hole accommodates two people and includes a small bedroom, a living area with a fire, a bathroom and of course, the iconic circular front door.

The Hobbit hole may be the perfect place for travellers who are looking to relax in the countryside, with Kristie’s listing saying that, “the majority of your neighbours will be deer, rabbits, birds and grouse. It’s two miles up the mountain and although there are houses in the area, it gets more remote the closer you get to the Hobbit hole.”

The property posed many challenges throughout the construction process, as a section of the mountain literally had to be carved out to make way for the build. A layer of gravel and plastic was laid out to act as a foundation, while treated lumber and sheeted plywood was used to create the shape. Care was taken to ensure that the structure would be able to support the earth that would be sitting on top of it, while a special wrapping was used to guard the house from ice and rain.

The final steps in the build saw a corrugated metal roof being added, along with French drains all around the house, which was then fitted with different rustic, middle-earth inspired furnishings either built by hand or bought at second-hand markets.

With travellers now actively searching for interesting and unforgettable places to stay while on holidays, many Airbnb hosts like Kristie are creating unique, tailored experiences for guests. More information on, “The Tiny House in the Shire” is available on Airbnb.
