While the world fawns over The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda and eagerly awaits Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, travellers have been flocking to take part in a real-world space adventure in Iceland, at The Galaxy Pod Hostel – where you can sleep in bunks that wouldn’t look out of place on board The Millennium Falcon.
Located in the heart of Reykjavík, the Galaxy Space Pod Hostel sees guests climbing into futuristic, self-contained units to spend the night in a setting that makes them feel as if they are racing through space. With curtains and doors for privacy, fans for air circulation and a secure locker for valuables, the pods also have charging stations, reading lights, hangers, mirrors and atmospheric lighting. They come in either single or queen size (four beds are available in this size in the four-person dormitory), with the latter being big enough for two people. There are mixed-gender dormitories that sleep four, eight and 24 people, while a six-person female-only dorm is also available.
While Stars Wars fans have been flocking to the hostel recently, according to the creator, it was actually The Fifth Element – another sci-fi favourite – that inspired its creation. “Remember that scene when they are on the huge ship and go through the sleeping area where people have those sort of Japanese capsule beds? Well, our pods are much cosier, but that movie really inspired me! I believe there is some romance in this kind of accommodation when you are travelling to a place like Iceland that pretty much looks like another planet,” Sverrir Guðmundsson of Galaxy Pod Hostel told Lonely Planet.
Sverrir also said that his goal was to create luxury accommodation at a lower price, given the fact that Iceland can be expensive for tourists to visit.
Galaxy Pod Hostel also includes the regular amenities you would expect to find at any normal hostel such as a shared kitchen where guests can cook and store their food, and a bar and lounge with a nice view. The hostel also recently unveiled a virtual reality room where visitors can choose from over 60 different games for free.
“We have all the most popular games, but Google Earth VR is also a really practical tool to help guests plan their trips in a fun and futuristic way. Our location is also great, we have a grocery store right across the street and the main shopping street is only seven-minute walk away.”
