A coral reef frequented by whale sharks has been destroyed by construction work at the LUX resort on South Ari Atoll , according to reports from the Divers Association of Maldives.

The resort obtained government approval to cut a channel through the coral to give snorkellers access to the edge of the reef, but an environmental assessment has warned that the new channel will increase erosion, alter currents and reduce the frequency of whale shark sightings in the marine protected area.
