Let these gorgeous soundclips take you back to your favourite destinations

When travelling we often have a camera at the ready to try and capture the sights for our memories but sometimes sounds can bring you right back to an incredible memory. Now Expedia has captured some of that ambience and created beautiful illustrations of the sound waves to go with it.

Amazon Rainforest, Brazil

A truly relaxing aural experience, full of bird and occasional frog noises. As one of the most biologically diverse places on the planet, an avid nature lover could easily lose themselves trying to distinguish the calls of various species.

Sahara Desert, Algeria

This natural wonder is shaped by the constantly shifting sand dunes. After stumping visitors for centuries, researchers eventually discovered the eerie noise is caused by the vibrations of the individual sand grains as they fall down the dunes.

Yellowstone National Park, USA

Among the amazing scenery found in the park, most famous of all is probably the erupting geysers. Their bubbling sound is a reminder of the powerful forces that often remain unseen beneath the earth’s surface.

Bwindi National Park, Uganda

Home to at least half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, one of the animals is captured here as she munches down on her meal. The entire park is protected as an animal sanctuary and conservation area.

Algarve, Portugal

Few sounds can take you away from your surroundings faster than crashing waves and this snippet allows you to briefly lose yourself in the sounds of Portugal’s most famous beach. It’s experienced somewhat of a chic resurgence recently so don’t expect the beaches to be as empty as this.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

The mysticism of the Buddhist religion is intrinsically linked with Thailand in the mind of many travellers and a reminder that sometimes urban environments can be just as inspiring and surprising as more isolated places.

Kruger National Park, South Africa

Despite being home to more than a thousand species of plants and animals, a sighting of a lion in full glorious roar is something on the bucket list of many visitors and is captured here perfectly.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Sea lions may not be the most elegant of creatures – nor the most relaxing to listen to – but this friendly species is only found in Ecuador and they are affectionately known as the islands’ welcoming party.

New York City, USA

This is the quintessential urban ambience and, for many city-lovers, can actually be quite relaxing and even help them focus at work. It’s the soundtrack to many of our lives but can also represent a rather glamorous escape too.

Vatnajökull, Iceland

These spectacular glaciers may seem somewhat inhospitable to life but the whimbrel’s persistent and clear call begs to differ.

Cape Tribulation, Australia

Cape Tribulation is the remote headland between the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. A popular eco-tourism destination, it’s easy to imagine the same sounds bouncing around the landscape thousands of years ago.
