Temple of Hackney is a meat-free ‘chicken’ shop, and its food is made from the meat substitute seitan instead of meat.
The people behind the new shop are called Bec and Pat, aka Temple of Seitan, and they previously sold their vegan wares at food markets before opening the premises in Hackney.
Located next to a halal butcher’s shop, the eatery also serves vegan burgers and offers gluten-free options.
Social media posts show eager customers queuing outside the restaurant, which is situated on Morning Lane in Hackney Central.
Speaking after the opening weekend, Temple of Seitan thanked their customers and posted on their Facebook page that they were ‘overwhelmed in every way: customers, support, challenges and by lack of sleep!’
‘The step up from street food stall to full-blown shop has been a massive one, and we can’t tell you how much we appreciate your help, support, patience, understanding and feedback,’ they said.
