Why this Victoria's Secret perfume is the perfect mosquito repellent

Most people use perfume to make themselves more attractive, but researchers have found that a bottle of Victoria’s Secret ‘Bombshell’ perfume is the perfect repellent – for mosquitoes. Given that Victoria’s Secret is famed for its stunning supermodel “Angel” ambassadors like Candice Swanepoel and Adriana Lima, its fragrances are hugely popular worldwide among women. However, nobody wants to be covered in mosquito bites, particularly with the ever-present threat of the Zika virus, so the news that ‘Bombshell’ may repel the pesky little creatures is an added bonus.

A study was conducted by researchers at the New Mexico State University in the US on ten commercially available perfumes to examine their effectiveness at repelling mosquitoes. The experiment used two different types of mosquitoes – the Asian tiger mosquito and the yellow fever mosquito – and the results indicated that ‘Bombshell’ was the most effective at keeping the annoying insects at bay.

On a cautionary note, half a millilitre of the perfume was used in the study, so researchers don’t believe that it would have the same effect when used in normal concentrations. It also concluded that products containing diethyltoluamide are more effective as insect repellents. Still it’s nice to know that the fragrance has the ability to get rid of at least some of the pesky creatures that tend to plague the bombshells wearing it.
