An attack off the waters of popular Waikiki Beach was initially believed to be a shark, but officials now say an eel is to blame.

Hawaii coral reefs are home to many eel species, including a few that have sharp teeth. Eels are usually not aggressive unless they feel threatened. The latest attack comes after a spate of shark attacks around the islands.
