Worried about germs on your travels? This pocket-sized robot could be the answer

If you tend to fret about germs when you’re on your travels, a pocket-sized smart robot has been invented that can sanitise and disinfect your hotel beds and other surfaces. CleanseBot, a patent-pending robot from Ventur Studio in the US, is equipped with a four UV-C lamps, and its manufacturers say that it kills 99.99% of germs, bacteria and dust mites on any surface.

If you’re worried about germs in your bed, just set the CleanseBot down on it for either 30 or 60 minutes, and it will sanitise and disinfect your bed sheets and blankets. It can run for four hours before needing a charge, and its UV-C light can help prevent the spread of airborne viruses too.

This is good news because one study indicated that hotel rooms have more germs than planes, homes or schools and it has also been shown in other studies that the TV remote is likely to be the most germ-ridden item in the room. In addition, a study from the University of Houston tested 19 surfaces in hotel rooms for bacteria, and found that main room light switches had an average of 112.7 colony-forming units of bacteria per cubic centimetre.

For these reasons, the CleanseBot has a handheld mode for cleaning smaller objects like the alarm clock, phone and TV remote. It will never get stuck in the bed or fall off the edge and it has 18 smart AI sensors to keep it going. Its sensors are specifically for materials and fabrics and not simply for hardwood or flat surfaces.

The robot was funded through a Kickstarter campaign that ended in January and raised over US$1.8m (€1.59m). The first batch of products are expected to ship in April 2019.
