Aerial artists bring wonder and awe to San Diego International Airport

While it’s true that airports are the hub of flights, take-offs of another nature are taking place in the heart of the airport bustle. San Diego International Airport is the first national airport in the US to start a performing arts residency program.

The new program features performers from the Astraeus Aerial Dance Theatre who, inspired by the airport environment, will create original and contemporary pieces fusing ballet, dance theatre, and cirque nouveau. Last month performers took to the air in the airport’s Sunset Cove with a dramatic display of dancers flying across the three-story building and soaring above travellers.

“We started the SAN residency program to offer our customers yet another unexpected encounter with enriching arts and culture from artists in the San Diego region,” Christopher Chalupsky, Senior Manager for Arts and Community Partnerships at the airport told Lonely Planet.

“The program compliments our ongoing concert series and gives travellers the opportunity to witness performing artists as they create and refine a new project, inspired by the airport environment, throughout the duration of their residency. Over the course of Astraeus Aerial Dance Theatre’s six-month stay, spectators can expect contemporary dance, music, acrobatics, and interactive encounters to enliven the San Diego travel experience.”

The Astraeus Aerial Dance Theatre was founded back in 2015 by aerialist and former California Ballet Company Principal Ballerina Jennifer Curry Wingrove. The prestigious dance troupe has received awards at the San Diego International Fringe Festival.
