Red-faced American couple rescued after trying to drive to an island
Two American tourists found themselves stranded on a beach after they had tried to drive to an island off the coast of Wales.
The embarrassed Texan pair decided to drive to Caldey Island, reports Irish radio station, Newstalk. However their aim to see a group of Cistercian monks ran aground when their car got stuck on a beach after they left the road.
Part of the reason for their confusion was that they had put their trust in their Sat Nav for directions but the voice went quiet as they struggled on the sandy beach. Locals in the Tenby area made three separate attempts to tow them out before a local person with a 4x4 got them back on the road again.
ITV News reports that observers of the unusual beaching said say the pair were “highly embarrassed” about getting stuck in such circumstances. While there is a ferry service to the island, it wasn’t in operation. However a local directed them to the pier where it would leave some time later. Les Langford, a local resident, said on Tenby Island Facebook that when he directed them to the harbor in Tenby, it was not to go by car to Caldey.
