Inside India's colourful Wes Anderson-inspired restaurant
The quirky, colourful world of Wes Anderson has inspired many creative things over the years, including a unique Airbnb in Canada with rooms devoted to different movies, and a special themed supper club in Chicago for food and film lovers. And now, visitors to India can step into a unique world once again inspired by the director’s famous style at Feast India Company, a modern restaurant that astounds all of the senses.
Located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Feast India Company features a bright pink paint-job inside and out that is punctuated by bold black, white and pink lines that run across the façade, walls, ceilings and floors of the restaurant. Designed by Renesa Architecture Design Interiors Studio, who nicknamed the restaurant “The Pink Zebra” throughout the project, the design takes inspiration from the owner’s love for Wes Anderson’s films.
The food is described as “progressive Indian cuisine” and the menu includes dishes such as biryani, panko zucchini bites, chicken tikka, baked broccoli, soup and spinach fritters. In keeping with the vibrant décor, the restaurant also runs a special tropical Tuesday every week, highlighting colourful cocktails and speciality dishes.
Located inside one of the oldest buildings in Kanpur, guests enter through the main entrance to a waiting area that leads to the two main floors, one of which contains a dining room and the other a terrace. The first floor room can accommodate up to 50 people, while the terrace sits up to 80.
“The Pink Zebra is a take on the bygone extravagance of the European grandeur during the 19th century British Raj in the city of Kanpur. The clients needed something that was never seen in the city, to catch the attention of the audience by making an immediate impact,” Sanchit Arora, Head Architect at Renesa Architecture Design Interiors Studio told Lonely Planet Travel News.
