The robots are coming. If you head to Boston’s bustling Seaport District, your might be waited on by something other than a human. Last month, YOTEL Boston added a new member to its staff: a robot named YO2D2, who was built by San Jose, California-based company Savioke, which develops and deploys autonomous robots that work in human environments.
YO2D2 is a 36-inch tall Relay robot programmed to autonomously summon the elevator, navigate crowded spaces, dance or ‘shimmy’ to music and greet guests in the first floor Club Lounge and rooftop Sky Lounge bar with clever messages. Guests can summon YO2D2 by requesting anything from snacks to fresh towels from Mission Control, which is YOTEL speak for the front desk. YO2D2 will then zoom its way up to each cabin (a.k.a. guest room) allowing guests to retrieve whatever item they requested from a storage compartment via the robot’s touchscreen.
“We don’t just do technology for technology’s sake, it needs to be functional, first and foremost,” says General Manager Chris Hartzell. “Since YO2D2 was introduced, our guests have been fascinated and entertained by the robot, but more importantly, it’s expediting the delivery of linens, extra towels and retail items to their cabins and freeing up our crew to assist guests with anything else they might need.” When YO2D2 isn’t hard at work, it recharges quietly by the hotel’s front desk.
YO2D2 isn’t the only robot in the YOTEL family – there’s also YOBOT, the luggage-storing robot at YOTEL New York, and Yoshi and Yolanda, who make deliveries for YOTEL Singapore. The hotel, which opened last summer, puts an affordable, tech-friendly spin on luxury airline travel.
