The Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur invites guests to a one-of-a-kind celestial-themed meal at its ‘Find Your Lucky Star’ restaurant pop-up created by award-winning global designer Emma Maxwell.
Located within the hotel’s Pavilions Lounge, diners are greeted by an unassuming black rectangular box. Once inside, the atmosphere is transformed. A three-metre-long mirrored glass table set for 12 reflects a time-lapse light show of a 360-degree galaxy produced by film director Damon Escott. Stars twinkle and shoot across the walls of the interior as guests dine on a six course meal, enveloping them within a slowly spinning Milky Way. To further set the mood, an outer space-inspired soundscape conceived by screen composer and music producer Ben Rosen completes the scene.
Chinese cuisine chef Ho Boon crafted the January menu to accompany the visual and aural elements, presenting six courses with wine pairings paying homage to both Asian influences as well as the restaurant pop-up theme. From steamed cod with ginger soya sauce and truffle oil to the flying-saucer-esque crispy fried oyster on roasted sesame cucumber, wasabi mayo and salmon ikura, each plate that whizzes by is beautifully made and adds to the theatrical dinner.
Maxwell, a designer whose work often aims to create an immersive environment, enjoys designing temporary installations because they grant unique flexibility. “I’ve done installations in the past and yes, I hope to do more in the future”, Maxwell said. “They’re fun to do. You can be more creative in many more ways than with a permanent space”.
Since opening in December leading up to New Year celebrations, ‘Find Your Lucky Star’ has received high praise. “The response has been overwhelming and very positive”, Maxwell said. “So much so that the pop-up has been extended for another month”. The immersive installation runs until 31 January. To earn a coveted seat at the galactic table and to find your very own lucky star, book in advance with Pavilions Lounge.
