Much before the pandemic had us stop and rethink the way we were running the world, sustainability had become a buzzword. In the past year however, the concept has taken a new meaning altogether—it is no longer a fad but a guiding principle that many, many individuals and organizations across the world are switching to.
From design to architecture, fashion to art, travel to food, every field and every industry is doing its bit to help the world be a cleaner and greener place. The awareness of the damage we have caused to the environment is at an all-time high and the drive to do something is stronger than ever before. And the travel industry is at the forefront of this movement.
At Lonely Planet we are committed to bringing to our readers the latest and the most relevant updates from the world of travel. Our Best In Travel 2021 therefore is focused not on destinations, trends and experiences we think will be big this year, but on celebrating the people and projects that make any destination special, especially with respect to taking care of its surroundings and ecology. People and places that are transforming travel for the better and pushing for positive change in categories like sustainability, diversity and community.
To honor and recognize such places, people, and practices, and to bring to you stories from closer home we have dedicated the month of February to sustainability—in travel, cuisine, spaces, design, and destinations. We believe it is time to showcase individual efforts in sustainability through the stories we bring you and hope it encourages more people and organizations, catalyzing a mass movement.
