London’s Kew Gardens orchid festival is being given a colourful Brazilian theme this year. In fact, the site is a veritable tropical paradise as orchids and other striking flora bloom in every corner of its glasshouse.

Among the not-to-be-missed garden delights on display are two giant rainforest tree sculptures that are covered with bromeliads and oncidiums, while five figures representing the flamboyant costumes of carnival dancers take centre stage in the pond area. Close by is a tunnel containing a cornucopia of vibrant tropical plants.

The manager of the Prince of Wales Conservatory, Nick Johnson, said the idea of a carnival theme was raised a few years ago. This year the organisers decided that with the Olympics taking place in Brazil, it would be fitting to theme aspects of that country in the festival. According to the Evening Standard, Johnson said it was now time “to have a party at Kew to celebrate it all.” The festival continues until 6 March.
