With so many people worldwide either being quarantined or practising social distancing, the days of eating out are temporarily behind us. To help people to ramp up their culinary skills at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, Borough Market in London is offering free online cookery classes.
The market has existed at the southern end of London Bridge for 1000 years. It is home to food shops and stalls where chefs cook for customers and wholesale greengrocers cater to London's top-end restaurants. While some of its traders are still operating, a number have closed, and customers these days are asked to shop and leave straight away to ensure that social distancing is practised.
To help continue the interactivity that the market's customers love, it has decided to create a dedicated community space on Facebook called Borough Market Community to keep people connected. The market will be sharing recipes, articles, videos and tips to maximise viewers' produce shopping, and it is also streaming online cookery classes on Instagram Live.
So far, the market's social media followers have been treated to a class by chef Hayden Groves. In addition, food writer Lisa Fearn talked viewers through simple doughs to make with children, and writer and historian Angela Clutton discussed using vinegar and ginger to bring flavour and adaptability to recipes.
Angela is also host of the Borough Market Cookbook Club, which hosts live Skype cookbook club sessions for those who love good food, cookery books and good company. You can check out what is on offer on Borough Market's Instagram page here and Facebook page here.
