This band will make you a personalised Spotify playlist for your journey

For many travellers, one of the most important aspects of preparing for any trip is getting the perfect tunes ready. Whether it’s a cross-country road trip or a long-haul flight, a good playlist can make all the difference when it comes to relaxing or getting pumped up. With that in mind, Texan band Khruangbin have offered up their expertise and genre-spanning musical knowledge to all prospective travellers, by creating a website that generates personalised Spotify playlists based on specific travel plans and interests.

Visitors to Khruangbin’s website will find it curiously lacking on information about the band. Instead, they are presented with a bar that allows them to enter the airport codes of departure and arrival points. After doing that, and clicking “Let’s Fly”, users are presented with a few other options to help create the perfect playlist. These include the choices between Window (“I like to stay in my seat”) or Aisle (“I like to get up and dance”) Coffee (“relaxing”) or Tea (“upbeat”), First Class or Cattle Class and whether or not it’s a direct flight or a multi-stop. After inputting all the information, the website generates a unique playlist displayed on an interactive luggage tag, with an option to save it to a personal Spotify account.

The idea behind the unique project stems from the band’s interest in world music, their obsession with different sounds and moods, and their passion to share interesting genres with their fans. Comprised of bass player Laura Lee, guitarist Mark Speer and drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson, Khruangbin’s name takes influence from 1960’s Thai funk, and literally translates to “Engine Fly” in Thai. When it comes to their own sound, the band cites a diverse range of influences, from Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock to southeast Asian pop, rock and funk. All of this of course indicates Khruangbin’s obsession with different types of music, something that they are passionate about sharing with their own fans with this new project.
