If you hate leaving your furry friend at home, you may want to check out a movie theater designed for dog owners and their pets that has opened in Plano, Texas. K9 Cinemas allows humans to bring up to two dogs each into the theater, and it offers affordable snacks for both owners and dogs.
Cinema owner Brad Lankford was inspired to open the pet-friendly venue because he loves his dog Bear and also loves movies. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive,” he tells Lonely Planet. “Depending on the dog size, for the most part we encourage the dog to sit with their owner in the seats. We have 60 seats but only sell 25 tickets to make sure there is ample room for the dogs to snuggle up with you during the movie. We even have plans to bring in couches for seating instead of our padded chairs in the future.”
Owners are responsible for taking their dogs out for bathroom breaks and the theatre also requires that they are up-to-date on their shots. K9 Cinemas is currently open on select weekends and it shows older films rather than new releases. “This is so our customers feel like they’re not getting ripped off spending money on a new release movie, as they may have to step outside to take their dog to use the bathroom and miss part of it,” says Brad.
Eric says that the dogs are usually calm and quiet throughout the movies, but if they get noisy or upset, the owner just takes them outside until they calm down and then brings them back in.
