Want to relive your childhood? Summer camps for adults are taking over North America

For many North Americans, their summer camp experiences are delightful memories to look back on. Now, they don’t have to be a memory any longer with the explosion in popularity of summer camps that are just for adults.

Camp No Counselors are all-inclusive adult summer camps that run in various locations across the USA and Canada, offering a nostalgic weekend break away from adult life and responsibilities. As well as meals and an open bar, you can join in camp activities like archery, zip-lining, scavenger hunts and making friendship bracelets. One of the highlights of the weekend is the camp theme parties and this year they range from fairytales and fantasy to pyjama parties.

The first camp took place in 2013 in Upstate New York when founder Adam Tichauer rented out an entire summer camp for him and his friends to recharge. The weekend was such a success he decided to turn it into a full-time business the next year. This year, Camp No Counselors added 6 locations, bringing the total up to 16. The new locations include Calgary, Denver and San Antonio.

Adam told Lonely Planet he attributes the continued success to being a break from the modern world. “Adults are more connected than ever before”, he said. “Connected to each other, to work, to the news, to everything. Each of these ‘over-connections’ adds stress. Adults need outlets to disconnect from it all more than ever. We provide that safe, fun and pre-planned space for that escape to occur.”

The adult summer camps don’t just welcome North Americans hoping to relive their childhood. Guests have come from as far away as Australia to experience the camps for the first time and often leave with rave reviews.
