This summer the Château de Versailles (Palace of Versailles) will host an electronic music festival for the very first time.
A symbol of opulence, decadence and indulgence in pre-revolutionary France, Château de Versailles is one of the most visited landmarks in France, drawing in nearly ten million visitors annually. Built by King Louis XIV in the mid-17th century, the state-owned palace and its gilded Hall of Mirrors is just an hours’ drive from Paris and remains a dazzling example of Baroque and Rococo splendour. While it attracts a young crowd to its contemporary art installations each summer, it seems an unlikely location to host an electronic music festival… but that’s exactly what the historic château of Versailles will do this year.
Showcasing the best of the French-electro scene, the Versailles Électro will be hosted by DJ and former Daft Punk manager, Busy P and is a celebration of his record label Ed Banger Records (the legendary French label that turned acts like Justice, Mr Oizo and Sebastian into international superstars). Busy P will be joined by three major DJs from his label: Breakbot x Irfane, P, Myd and So Me.
The DJs will perform at the foot of the Hall of Mirrors, overlooking the expertly groomed French gardens. The gardens themselves will be transformed into a massive dancefloor where revellers are invited to dance against what’s probably the most elegant festival backdrop this year. According to event organisers: “this timeless evening is part of the Versailles tradition of the first festivals of the Sun King’s time and also echoes Versailles, cradle of French electro.”
