A guided cycle ride celebrating the lives and facial hair of three Slovenians has been named the best cycle tour in Europe. The Moustache Tour was chosen by in-flight magazine, easyJet Traveller, as one of its 12 ‘alternative’ travel highlights of 2018 as part of its new #easyjetbestof awards. According to the editor, Jonny Ensall, the awards celebrate the “real experiences that gave us goosebumps this year.”
The Moustache Tour examines the secrets of Ljubljana through the lives of architect Jože Plečnik, writer Ivan Cankar and painter Rihard Jakopič, who were moustachioed men who left their mark on Ljubljana and Slovenia as great artists. The cycle offers visits to the architect’s visionary room, the writer’s favourite bar and the painter’s National Gallery. At the end of the day, participants get a slice of potica cake, coffee or tea and a moustache-related surprise at the International Centre of Graphic Arts atelier. The 3.5-hour adults-only tour runs from 1 April to 30 September every Friday at 3pm, starting at the Slovenian Tourist Information Centre in Ljubljana.
More than 30 of the magazine’s regular contributors and editors pooled their discoveries from a year of flights around the easyJet network, and handed out awards in 11 other categories. These included Best cat café (Maison de Moggy, Scotland), Best pool with a view (Hotel Miramonti Merano, Italy), Best public toilet (Strait Street Toilets, Malta), Best wild escape (Stedsans in the Woods, Sweden), Best cocktail in disguise (Bellboy’s Keep Clean #2, Israel), Best hotel for Instagram likes (Paradiso San Antonio, Ibiza), Best éclair (L’Eclair de Génie, France), Best escape game (The Crystal Maze, England), Best vegan burger (Temple of Camden, England), Best vinyl cave (12 Tónar, Iceland) and Best alfresco art (Fondation Carmignac, France)
Customers of easyJet were also invited to share their travel highlights using the #easyjetbestof hashtag, and their suggestions appear alongside the official list in the December issue of easyjet Traveller magazine.
