You want to be alone? The one time summer retreat of Greta Garbo goes up for sale

She famously said that she wanted to be alone, and movie star Greta Garbo clearly had solitude at this summer paradise. Her private villa at Ingarö, in the beautiful Stockholm archipelago is now on the market.

The property dates from  1929, and has an incredible charm. The Swedish actress who died 18 years ago was noted for her shyness and refused all interviews, autographs and invites, preferring her own company. She never married and had no children. The house was at one time owned by her brother but is now being sold by its current owner a businessman.

Although she spent 40 years in New York, the actress returned to this summer home in her native country.  The beachfront yellow villa comprises of seven bedrooms, a sauna, two guests houses and a games room.

The ground floor consists of a living room, library and TV room; with double French windows opening out to unobscured views of the lake. The house which sits on a 10,000 sqm beachside plot beside a golf course, is obscured from view by oak trees, rhododendrons and lavender that surround it giving total privacy.

The villa sits on the 16th biggest island in Sweden which was the location in more recent times for scenes in years in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

The price of the property is available on request from the agent Wrede, but is expected to fetch in the region of 32 million kroner (US$4 million).  The star’s New York apartment where she lived over 40 years sold for almost double the asking price recently, fetching $8.5 million. Unlike the Swedish home, it remained exactly as it was in Garbo’s lifetime, said to have been a major attraction to buyers.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to convey such a historic property. The villa is truly an archipelago dream with the sea view, the private pier and the lush garden,” said Titti Johansson, the listing agent for Werde.
