A hotel in Gothenburg is offering guests the chance to stay at a suite where the price you pay is determined by the amount of time you spend online. On 14 February, one family will have the chance to experience a unique hotel stay at the Swedish Hotel Bellora and there only one condition – they need to put down their screens to get the best rate.
Hotel Bellora has collaborated with Swedish insurance company Länsförsäkringar to launch The Check Out Suite, which encourages visitors to spend more time with their families and friends instead of online. The room features ‘The Skärmfri’, a screen-free smart lamp, which tracks the amount of time they spend on social media and gradually changes colour from white to red. The price charged for the suite depends on how much time guests spend online, as the lamp measures how much they surf.
After the recommended recreational screen time of 30 minutes per person, the lamp switches to red and they have reached full price for The Check Out Suite. The less time they spend online, the cheaper the stay, and if they don’t use their screens at all, they get to stay for free. The idea is that it aims to improve digital health, as well as rewarding families who manage to stay away from their devices.
