If you were watching the Oscars last night, you may have noticed a commercial for a hotel few people would want to visit.
The ad is promoting the “newly-renovated” Overlook Hotel, better known as the setting of Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining. Based on a Stephen King novel, the film follows the terrifying disintegration of the Torrance family, as the father, Jack, slowly starts to lose his mind as they spend the off-season as caretakers for a remote hotel in the Rockies. The ad shows staff washing up blood from the hallway and the famous “redrum” off the door – all in the effort to reopen the doors to brave guests.
If that all seems a bit odd, that’s because it turns out the commercial is actually promoting the forthcoming Academy Museum. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences – the organization that runs the annual Academy Awards, or Oscars – is opening the new museum in 2019. It will be “dedicated to the art and science of movies” and explore filmmaking. Naturally, the immersive and experimental museum will be located in Los Angeles, at Wilshire and Fairfax. It’s sure to be another big attraction for cinephiles in LA, as it will house items like props and costumes – like the ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz – from famous movies through the decades.
But, if you can’t wait for the new museum to open – or if you just love horror films – you can actually book a stay at the hotel used in The Shining. The Stanley Hotel in Colorado continues to draw in fans of the horror film and those interested in the paranormal. It’s not a reputation that the hotel shies away from, as there are even “night spirit tours” at the hotel where guests will learn about the kinds of strange activities that many people claim to have encountered at the hotel.
