Many Indian states have a rich heritage of textile crafts. The patterns and designs of these textiles and handwoven masterpieces are inspired by sculptures, paintings, Hindu epics and also showcase the local silks and textiles available in the region. Both Bengal in the east and Rajasthan in the north have many hereditary craftspeople who are involved in these crafts that have withstood the onslaught of mechanized and mass-produced textiles. A visit to these states brings the traveler up and close with their brilliant textile crafts.
The Baluchar hand woven silks from West Bengal and the many kinds of textile crafts like woodblock printing, cotton embroidery, gota and zardozi work, tie and dye techniques of textile designs and more from Rajasthan showcase an amazing range of textile art from these two states in India. Here are some vibrant examples of exquisite textiles from the two states.
Rajasthan's royal courts and heritage led the way in showcasing fantastic textile designs and embroidery in silks, fine muslin and cotton. Master craftsmen were encouraged to produce special textiles for the royals and also for the temple deities. Block printing using intricately carved designs on wooden blocks, motifs of animals, birds, plants, fruits and flowers, natural dyes from plant and fruit and gem extracts were textile signatures in Rajasthan. The use of silver and gold threads and applique and embroidery raised these textiles into grand garments meant for special occasions.
The Baluchars hailed from Murshidabad district in Bengal in the 18th century. Baluchari saris and textiles had floral, animal and plant motifs in plenty. Their distinctive designs and patterns were also linked to the recreation of the intricate sculptures of the terracotta temples of Bishnupur. Images of Europeans riding horses, scenes from the Hindu epic Ramayana and figures of men and women playing music, engaged in social gatherings, festive occasions and battle scenes and prayer chants were also woven in silk on these saris. The Baluchari textiles are a rich repository of social history woven in the most dazzling of silks in bright colors.
