Lonely Planet review for Colosseum
The Colosseum is the most extraordinary of all Rome’s monuments. It’s not just the amazing completeness of the place, or its size, but the sense of its gory history that resonates: it was here that gladiators met in mortal combat and condemned prisoners fought off hungry lions. Two thousand or so years on, it’s still hauling in the crowds. Don’t let the lengthy queue put you off: just pop down to the Palatine ticket office, buy your combined ticket there, and on returning march straight in.

Audio tour? No need
sajrmullins recommends this,
If you rather not purchase the audio tour, take with you the book Rick Steve's Rome and he has a couple pages walking tour of the Colosseum. Its just as good if not better.

pure history, a masterpiece of global architecture, just go!
anabellls recommends this,
Real scenario for Roman gladiators, it is a real experience unlike movies and certain TV shows which bear no resemblance to real Roman life. This is an amazing masterpiece of architecture.

I would recommend doing a walking tour, there are heaps available. I got so much more from the experience learning about the history and you also get to skip the massive line and can take your time to look around after the your.

ROMA. Is tied at number one of my favorite places, (to Athens). So much history. Love it, the culture, the air (atmosphere), and the water oh the water in roma. OF COURSE. Don't forget the food, in particular the GELATO.

A little disappointing
bmad recommends this,
Take a visit, you can get off at colosseo station, and basically walk across the street. I was really excited for this, but in reality it was kind of a let down. I find it is just as great from the outside as in, especially if you are on a budget. However, when I was there there were stray cats running around the inside, which was pretty cute to see them playing and basquing in the sun.
I went both during the day and at night, and in my opinion the night time is far prettier ( but if you want to go inside, you need to go during the day because it will be closed in at night.)
Be aware of the guys dressed in costumes outside of the colosseum, if you take a picture of or with them, they will be expecting money in return.
Across the street is a small bar, which was pretty quiet when I was there, but great service and atmosphere. It is a nicer spot, so dress accordingly.
