Pal's Sudden Service

East Tennessee

While you're still laughing about the name, the speedy team at this outpost of the popular Tri-Cities drive-through chain will have your burger and 'Frenchie fries' hot and ready to go at the second window – after a quick drive around the back of the building. Biscuits are served in the morning. Pal's opened its doors in 1956 in Kingsport.

The mint-blue facade, with a giant burger and hot dog emerging from the roof, is worth a look even if you don't eat here. But you should. The burgers are great.

The acclaimed chain is a former Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winner, putting it in the big league when it comes to business practices.
