Peter Fechter Memorial

Historic Mitte

On 17 August 1962, 18-year-old would-be escapee Peter Fechter was shot and wounded by Berlin Wall border guards and then left to bleed to death as the guards looked on. A simple memorial pillar on Zimmerstrasse marks the site where he died.
