This 16th-century Mallorca estate has been transformed into a new boutique hotel

A chic new hotel has been unveiled inside a historic 16th-century house nestled on Palma de Mallorca. Located in the Old Quarter, Can Bordoy Grand House and Garden is a stylish and modern getaway built on a site that was formerly home to a kindergarten of the Catholic religious order of Sagrado Corazón de Jesús.

Designed by award-winning studio OHLAB, the hotel was created with a sense of homely tranquillity in mind and includes 24 suites, a heated outdoor pool, a secluded rooftop, a library and a spa. The renovation was inspired by kintsugi, the Japanese method for repairing broken ceramics with gold, silver, or platinum, with original features being accented and re-introduced into the design throughout. The space has been decorated with gothic relics, marble tiling, baroque mirrors and custom-made light fixtures.

“The hotel’s most beautiful feature is its garden – the largest private one in Palma, which incorporates outdoor dining available to hotel guests, locals and tourists. It also has a small pool and sun loungers with views of the cathedral for hotel guests,” a representative of Can Bordoy Grand House and Garden told Lonely Planet. The 750-square metre garden boasts over 70 plant species, including an enormous Lledoner tree, typical on the island as a sign of welcome at Mallorcan houses.

Inside, the rooms offer views of interior patios and Palma’s Old Quarter. Amenities include in-room Bluetooth sound systems and concierge and butler services. The on-site restaurant Botànic serves Mediterranean-inspired dishes made from local ingredients that have a minimal impact on the environment. Menu items include a cuttlefish and sobrasada sandwich, moray fritters with turmeric mayonnaise and Iberian pork shoulder blade sheets with mussels and fennel.
