Occupying a former Georgian coaching inn and known by the honorific 'Royal' ever since Queen Victoria visited, the Oak is easily the grandest hotel-restaurant in Welshpool. Adorned in bright patterns, the rooms are comfortably modern, while the public bar and restaurant serve the town both for casual get-togethers and destination dining (mains £15 to £17).
Afternoon teas, pub muzak and unchallenging brown couches very much signal the Oak's middle-of-the-road métier.
