The private island of Roch Ar Hon, just 10 minutes by boat from the Côtes-d'Armor in Brittany, is up for sale for $1.8 million (€1.6 million). It offers gorgeous scenery and plenty of seclusion without being too far from the mainland, should you ever need to nip back for essentials in a hurry.

Described by realtors Sotheby's International as a "little jewel," the island comes with an 18th century Breton stone house that was renovated in the 1990s. The island is self-sufficient with electricity and a private water supply and has a docking area for a boat, as well as a sentry tower. The stone house includes two bedrooms, a kitchen, a fireplace and a wide terrace with sea views that's perfect for al-fresco dining. But one of the standout features is "a glazed living room that gives you the impression of being on the bow of a boat," say Sotheby's. "The house is sold furnished; you just need to bring your bags."

Thanks to its location, the island could serve as a holiday home. It lies close to the car-free archipelago of Bréhat, a holiday resort that's popular with French families in the summer. So if you're looking for some livelier pursuits or activities for children, you can make the short trip to Bréhat. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the micro-climate allows many Mediterranean plants to flourish so if you have a green thumb, Roch Ar Hon could keep you busy year-round. The realtors believe that "nature lovers are potential buyers just like those who want to make a childhood dream come true."

According to the ad, the island is completely private and has had only one owner. And thanks to its price (the entire island and the stone house are cheaper than many Parisian apartments), the sale has made the national news in France.

If you have the money to spare, you can organise a viewing with Sotheby's International Realty France - Monaco.
