Destin has the odd claim of appealing to retirees, families and spring breakers. The skin of this town is admittedly not too appealing – from the road, Destin looks like an endless chain of strip malls, high-rise condos and mini amusement parks. But local beaches are a veritable balm for the soul, and are quite beautiful besides.
Deep-sea fishing is an entrenched part of the area's tradition, with an offshore shelf dropping to depths of 100ft about 10 miles off Destin's east pass. Locals call their town the 'world's luckiest fishing village' – not that it looks much like a village anymore.
