Miriam Schmidt Botanical Gardens

Gardens in Sint Eustatius

Started in 1988 on a former sugar plantation, these semiwild botanical gardens grow across the southeastern slopes of the island's dormant volcano, the Quill, 5km east of Oranjestad. It's a fragrant introduction to the island's rich flora, with a Sensory Garden, Palm Garden and Kitchen Garden, Bird Observation Trail and Lookout Garden (with telescope) overlooking St Kitts. Check road conditions before setting out as the road's often impassable, even by 4WD. Otherwise be prepared to hike (taxis don't run here).

A shade house for seedlings and cuttings offers respite from the fiercely beating sun. It's still a work in progress; plans are underway for a Children's Garden, Native Garden and Pre- and Post-Columbian Garden. Morning guided tours (included in the donation) can be arranged in advance by contacting the St Eustatius National Parks Foundation (Stenapa).
