Museo Nacional de Antropología David J Guzmán

San Salvador

This worthwhile museum has an excellent range of Maya and Olmec (pre-Maya) statues and relics from ancient Cuscatlan, as well as Lenca artifacts from eastern El Salvador. Particularly compelling is the gallery examining rituals and beliefs concerning death in Mesoamerica; the traditional crafts displays are also enlightening. Most explanations are in Spanish and English.

There's also a first-rate cafe here.
