Aizen Kōbō

Imperial Palace & Around

In the heart of the Nishijin textile district in a beautifully restored machiya (traditional Japanese townhouse), Aizen Kōbō has been producing its indigo-dyed handwoven textiles for three generations using the traditional dyeing method known as aizome. Products are hand-dyed using natural fermenting indigo and vegetable dye sourced from the Tade plant, native to Japan.

You can purchase high-quality textiles, from shirts and noren (curtains that hang in the entry of Japanese restaurants) to tablecloths and samu-e (traditional garments worn by Zen Buddhist priests), or have something custom-made. It's best to call ahead on weekends to make sure it's open.
