Artisan Sake Maker

Vancouver

Using locally grown rice, this tiny craft sake producer (the first of its kind in Canada) should be on everyone's Granville Island to-do list. Twinkle-eyed sake maker Masa Shiroki creates tempting tipples; you can dive in for a bargain $5 three-sake tasting. It's an eye-opening revelation to many drinkers who think sake is a harsh beverage. Takeout bottles also available.

Consider buying a jar of kasu; the lees left over from the fermenting process are a great exotic cooking ingredient and are even used in the small array of chocolaty bonbons for sale on the counter.
