Río Bec Dreams

Top choice in Campeche State

This Canadian-run jungle lodge, 12km west of Xpujil and 2km west of Chicanná, is a little paradise and far superior to the options in Xpujil. Though it's located just off noisy Hwy 186, it features tropical grounds and a lovely restaurant. Its seven thatched-roofed cabañas are simple and colorful; some comprise one room only, larger ones have a screened-in patio.

Breakfast is extra and there are four pet dogs. The entertaining owners can arrange Calakmul tours.

Also here is a wonderful, open-air restaurant set amid tropical plants, which serves the best homemade food in the area with dishes including Mediterranean pasta, Indian curry and chili con carne. It'll arrange takeout breakfasts and lunches, useful for when visiting sites.
