Centro Vacacional Boquerón

Puerto Rico

This huge, well-equipped government-operated complex is the best of its kind in Puerto Rico – a sprawling village of basic apartments by the well-groomed Balneario Boquerón that hold six people and have a bathroom, kitchen, bunk beds and ceiling fans. They come in two classes – cabins (a basic option with no air-con – not recommended) and villas (more modern, with air-con).

The rooms are a bit like summer camp – you even have to provide your own linen – but the beach outside your door ranks among the island's finest.

The place gets booked a year in advance for summer and holidays, but stands half-empty in low season.
