Built between 1874 and 1882, just after the Jewish community in Italy had gained full emancipation after centuries of persecution, this vast Moorish-styled synagogue is a beautiful, polychrome hodgepodge of Islamic, Jewish and Christian religious architecture that recalls the Aya Sophia in Istanbul. A small museum on the 2nd floor documents the history of Jewish Florence.
