Sassoon Docks

Fishermen at the Sassoon Dock in the Colaba district of Mumbai, India.

Start early to visit the city’s oldest and largest working dockyard, where Mumbai's fishing life plays out in full color. Murals and a weathered clock tower mark the entrance to this 1875 Sassoon-built site on reclaimed land, still a vital hub for the Koli community – Mumbai’s original fisherfolk.

Arrive before 6am to watch trawlers unload jawla, kolambi and Bombay duck as buyers jostle and workers haul ice-slick baskets through narrow lanes. The dock is split between a local wholesale market and an export zone, both buzzing.

You can take a guided tour the dock as part of No Footprints’ Mumbai by Dawn experience (nfpexplore.com; ₹17,000 for two).
