Rattling up a railway track astride Puy de Dôme, this pleasure train (inaugurated in 1907) hoists visitors to the 1465m summit after a leisurely 15-minute journey. Views are sublime, especially on clear days: the pouting cinder cones of the Chaîne des Puys melt into the verdant Limagne plain. Departures are two or three times per hour (or hourly in winter).
In poor weather such as wind or snow, it's worth calling ahead to check trains are running. Ticket prices vary seasonally and are slightly cheaper outside the popular June-to-September season.
