Chashma Spring

Uzbekistan

Beneath the Fortress of Alexander the Great is the trout-filled Chashma Spring, formed, it is said, where the Prophet Mohammed’s son-in-law Hazrat Ali drove his staff into the ground. Several hundred holy trout occupy the pool, living off the mineral-laden waters of the spring. Next to the spring is a 16th-century Friday mosque and a 9th-century mausoleum.
