For a state with so few highways, this is a surprisingly comprehensive collection of 70 working antique vehicles, highlighting the evolution of the automobile from the late 19th century, as well as motor-vehicle history in Alaska. Gearheads will love this place.
There are plenty of rarities, including 10 automobiles that are the only ones of their kind. Check out curiosities, like the fully electric Columbia Mark XIX Surry from 1903 or the 1905 Sheldon, the very first car manufactured in Alaska. Mannequins wearing striking clothing from the 1860s through the 1930s help set the mood, and show that cutting-edge designs weren’t limited to vehicles. In 2026, the museum merged with the Pioneer Air Museum, adding more than 50 vintage airplanes to the Fountainhead collection in a sprawling 90,000-square-foot space one mile west of Pioneer Park.
