Mǎlǎolìu Niúròumiàn

Lanzhou

Overseen by a vivid and almost surreal painting of the statue Mother of the Yellow River, this brisk Muslim place serves up healthy and steaming bowls of filling and satisfying beef noodles. It looks cheap and utilitarian, but the business has been around for yonks. The standard bowl of beef noodles is ¥8, or ¥16 with extra beef. Rice dishes also served.

Note the name at the start of the restaurant name: the surname Mǎ (马; literally 'horse') is the most common surname among Chinese Muslims.
