Tashi Industries Carpet Factory

Western Bhutan

Anyone interested in carpets is welcome to make a visit to this handmade-carpet factory hidden in the north of town. At 49 knots per square inch, woven from Indian wool and coloured with synthetic dyes, the carpets are not top-notch, but the prices are right, with a 1m-by-2m carpet selling for Nu 9000.

The factory specialises in bulk orders for many of Bhutan's monasteries and also weaves mathra, the cloth used for a gho, for Nu 250 per sq metre.
