Guest rooms are not in the lodge itself; most are in log cabins nearby. Four of the Western Cabins have the only canyon views to speak of, and that's where you want to be if you can justify the $22 surcharge. Book them at least a year in advance.
Request 309, 306, 305 or 301 for the mesmerizing Western Rim views, the rest of the cabins are set back in the forest. Even those that say 'rim-side' don't have the sweeping vistas you dream about. For any room category, reserve as far in advance as possible, or check the lodge's website regularly, hoping for someone else to cancel – which happens more frequently than you would guess.
